Owl. Children's Poem. Translated.

"What is that sound in the night wood?
Is that a train that runs around?

Don’t worry! It’s not a train,
It’s a bird of night gloom, it is called an owl!

Every night, when the woods calm down,
It will be hungry in the most awful way, so it will fly in the dark to hunt mice
That have not yet gone to rest!

Dear Children, don’t worry, if you ever hear this sound again in the night forest.

I am telling you right now that it’s just an owl!"

PoetiKonstellation Thoughts:

This poem is a translation of the children’s poem called “Owl” (Jiří Dědeček) written in Czech language, since the task was to translate from our second language, so PoetiKonstellation decided to try Czech poetry. Honestly, translating poetry is not an easy task; this is not the first time that PoetiKonstellation performs this kind of task. In the past, she even received a few awards doing these kinds of translations that were published. However, it’s much easier to do this challenge if you use your own languages which you speak fluently. In this case it was not that simple, especially for PoetiKonstellation who loves to rhyme the words. English is a very complex language for creating poetry that rhymes…Now; can you imagine how you rhyme words if you have a specific text? Hopefully, you get it! Of course, some additional words have to be used and some words will be removed, some words will mean almost the same yet won’t be the same words… The last word “sound” is actually a word “voice” but to make the poem sound better (smile) PoetiKonstellation thought that “sound” sounds better (smile.) Dear Reader, have you ever tried this kind of task? Maybe you don’t speak Czech; however, would you read this poem to your children in English? What kind of foreign poetry do you like? Peace and Love! Laugh, Dream, Love…
